Find the Gift.
Every experience will either feed or drain your spirit. The most challenging and irritating part of the equation is that it is ultimately your choice. You either face circumstances with love and acceptance or fear and resistance. I have often said that everything that happens to you, happens for you, should you allow it. Unfortunately, it is often not until we are on the other side of the trial and tribulation that we are able to see the hidden gift that resulted from the experience.
A few years ago, my mom passed away from pancreatic cancer. Witnessing her suffering at the end is a picture that will never be completely erased from my mind. It is always present. I would give anything for her to be here right now...to laugh, to argue about our political differences, to share concerns about our dogs and my father, etc. But, she is not coming back. I had the blessing of gift with her before her transition; I was able to give my blessing to her (as were my siblings) for her release. She was able to let go.
Since that day, I have found myself nearly consumed with anxiety. It is easy to list the myriad of things that I have on my plate to validate my stress, but it really doesn't matter. Stress does not serve anyone, no matter what the cause. So, in addition to meditation and other disciplines that I have been utilizing to manage my anxiety, I remember my mom and the fact that, no matter how seemingly dire my circumstance, it is NOT cancer. Many might consider it to be a small bar from which to measure, but it is working. My life may be in utter chaos, but I have the luxury of good health today. There are so many others who have mountains much steeper to climb. I may not currently have monetary wealth, but I am rich in health. I breathe without difficulty or hesitation. Effortless, life-sustaining breath. Today, I am well. The stress will simply have to wait until another day.
Success or sabotage? It is always great to have an expansive vision but be mindful not to ignore the success (however small) that you have already achieved simply by continuing to be present.
Is this going to be an incredible day? Engage every person and circumstance as a tasty appetizer on a menu of yet unnamed delights. Better and better.
