Focus on Good.
Happiness is a choice, not a circumstance. It is important, however, that we do not minimize the discipline required to exercise this choice on a daily basis. Life is fraught with its share of challenges. If we wish to conquer them, it is vital that we condition ourselves to withstand the obstacles along the way.
Too often we are consumed by the things that are not going according to plan. We focus on what is missing at the expense of the good that is already in existence. If we wish to create, attract and retain more good in our lives, we must take inventory and appreciate that which has already arrived. With so many competing priorities, this requires an unwavering commitment to practicing gratitude.
Here’s the solution: every night before bed, write down 5 things for which you are grateful, specific to that day. Rather than focusing on generalities (such as my family, home, etc), concentrate on unique occurrences/blessings of that day. Precede each item on your list with “I am so grateful that…I love that…I am incredibly thankful,” etc. In the beginning, many experience some difficulties in completing their list. This is simply evidence of our habitual focus on what is missing, rather than what is present. Work through it. Eventually, you will find that the potential list items have compounded (allowing you to choose from a large selection). Do this for 90 consecutive days. This will facilitate the conditioning process, continually directing your attention to that which is positive in your life.
Success or sabotage? If we continue to only focus on our losses, we become blind to the gains even when we are standing in front of them.
Is this going to be an incredible day? Find the good in this day and, by continuing to do so, more good will appear.
