There is no one way to succeed except the way that is yours. The wisdom of the ages merely serves as a guide to provide you with the context to apply universal truths in your own life. Successful living is a journey of living in the question. It will not serve you to look to others for the answers, except as a way to put your life into context. You are a unique being with your own path. There are universal laws and truths, but your life is enough of a variable to provide the necessity for an individual approach (what works for your neighbor might not work for you).  We all carry the burden of responsibility for the management of our own lives. The mentors and shamans in our lives can simply assist us in facilitating the process. We must walk the path alone.
